Step One — become a distance runner first. Evolve your fitness and your milage in a sensible manner, or you will court recurring injury.
I think you will have PLENTY of work on your hands getting ready for the AMC half-marathon on August 17th. A great race and 6 mos. to prep for it. As a newbie distance runner this 13 mile race will be more than enough challenge for you. Then, if the training suits you, set your sights on a fall marathon.
