I´ve trained with Gels, usually I take them every 40 minutes or so...
About solid food I have never ate something while running but when I ran my first 20 miles I felt my legs out of energy by mile 18. Tried power bars and they upset my stomach. Gels work fine to me.
About the pace, I ran 20 Miles in 3:05.. I usually star the first 2 miles at a easy pace then pick it up a little bit. When ever there are downhills I try to push a little more to compensate the uphills.
