Hip Replacement & running

A friend of mine who is 64 has been told he needs a hip replacement. He has been running for over 30 years running all distances from 5K to marathons. His mind stil wants to run, but the body is not as willing. Has anyone been able to have a hip replaced and been able to get back to running? My friend was a 26 min. 5K and 4hr 45 min marathoner. Having a tough time finding anyone with positive info. Many people have encouraged to take up speed walking or biking. Can anyone help?
