Splits? They are simply the incremental times you record along the way to your finish time. In the US, they're mile-based, rather than kilometer-based.

A 10-mile race run in EVEN SPLITS would look like this:

Miles 1 thru 10 @ 7:10 pace

Halfway split = 35:50 and Finish time = 1:11:40

"Negative splits" means you've run the second half of the race at a faster pace than the first half. Thus a 10-mile race run in NEGATIVE SPLITS could look like this:

Miles 1 thru 5 @ 7:15 pace, Miles 6 thru 10 @ 7:05 pace

First 5 miles = 36:15 / second 5 = 35:25 — for a net Finish time of 1:11:40
