I understand the disappointment you must feel. It's a lot of effort and time to train. And I have done the same thing; missed a race because I waited until I was sure I could do it.
Personally, I do not like unregistered runners for several reasons. 1. The race director plans for a certain number of participants- and orders supplies appropriately. It leaves a shortage possibly if unregistered runners use them. 2. It's not fair to the paying participants. Why should someone run for free? 3. It causes furthter crowding on the course.
Another thing to consider. This is your first marathon. Wouldn't you like to get the finisher's medal and official time?
I suggest finding another marathon that you can register for so you can enjoy the entire experience.
There's a lot of races listed on this site. And there are still several on the east coast for fall marathons.
