Footwear for training!

Hello, I've just started training for the London Marathon (2008), I'm a first timer, and hardly the athletic type. At the moment, I'm training in army boots. My own figuring is that they're heavy (which I thought would speed up in the strengthening of my legs), waterproof and durable (these rainy evenings would have a devastating effect on new trainers (sneakers)). However, someone told me that boots are likely to weaken my ankles, so when it comes to the actual marathon (which I will run in trainers), I'll end up injured. Can someone confirm, or hopefully dispell this?
