Zeke made a good point. It's usually easier on your first to find one fairly close by.
Portland Marathon (Oregon) is a great first time race. A lot of perks and awesome course support. It's fairly flat, with only one steepish (if that's a word) hill about mile 18 as you run up to the St. John's Bridge. The finish line is totally awesome. They have a finisher's area, replete with treats- both liquid and food. It's usually run the first weekend of October.
Another one I liked was the Sun Trust Richmond Marathon (VA). Great scenery, good course support. Run in November.
Couere D' Alene (ID) is scenic, well organized, good support. It is hilly, though. It is also a smaller marathon, so it's a bit more homey. I liked it. Run in March/ April.
