I think for the first marathon, it's nice to not have to worry about being in a hotel room. When I did the Flying Pig, they were all excited about opening their breakfast buffet at 6:30am! Just like they always did! Guess when the start time was? Yep...6:30 am. Thanks for nothing. This was the hotel specially booked by the race, too.
I had to bring my tea, my bagel, my toaster (no toaster in the hotel, I called ahead)...it was a true pain in the ass. I woke up every half hour from the dream that my wake up call didn't happen and I'd missed the start.
In contrast, my first marathon was in my home town, I slept like a baby and had everything at my fingertips in my own kitchen, plus friends and family throughout the course.
I am always trying to convince DH to let me go somewhere for a marathon, and he's always reminding me that after I run a marathon, I'm toast and we can't do our favorite thing in a fun city, which is to walk around!
