Nutrition Advice for an older novice diabetic

I am a 60-year-old college professor training for my first half marathon in January, 2008, and have read a lot of material regarding all aspects of training, hydrating, equipment, and nutrition, but the one question that remains unanswered for me is, as a type II diabetic, I have been following a low carbohydrate, high fiber diet which seems the exact opposite of what is recommended for training. I take medication for my diabetes and will be talking to my doctor soon, but could someone give me a heads up on how I should both train with the right nutrition without endangering myself by overdoing the carbs? Thanks for having this page for us newcomers—it is very helpful.
