Oh yeah- I ran the PC-HB 1/2 in 2000: I didn't want the party to end! It's a One-in-a-M experience; The Marines ARE the Volunteers, the HB police are The Friendliest, Their was NO WIND along/after the turn-around (road-beachwalk-road ...all the way back to the beachside village-party), and the fan support was EXCEPTIONAL! -The whole thing seemed like a 'family-affair: Moms. Dads, Kids, Dogs, Strollers, Grandparents, -all were out for the 5k walk. -A wonderful sight.
*-Except for the 5k hilly detour through Pleasantville-Suburbia (really nice!) after Mile Three, the beachside Road-PCH 1 IS the course. Where the 1/2 turned around, the Big M's ran up/along the coast-PCH for another 10K (incredible Ocean view). At 9M/22M, the course merges "Right," -off the blacktop and into the Wide 'beach-walk' sidewalk, past the elevated Lifeguard stations, ....before merging Left, and back onto the Blacktop PCH for the final Mile. I LOVE this Course -more than Carlsbad ('San Diego' Marathon), more than LA (The Western Hemi), More than Irvine (The Southern Cal 1/2).
-It's that flat, tranquille, mesmerizing overcast-ocean view that stole my heart.
Bury me in Huntington Beach.
*The Cost: I heard on CNN just this past week that The HB-PCM is erecting a Finish Line "Beer Garden" ...to attract more 'runners!' Hmmm....
Nevertheless, -I loved the entire experience (a Hundred Port-o-Potties just around the corner from the Start-Finish!)
most sincerely, -a real... beach boy!
*I really loved this Marathon 'event.'
