I have been running marathons for a long time, I have found that if you are putting the miles in, a slow 20-24 miles before the race is not going to cause you any problems. I guess the key here is to know your limitations and not to over do it prior to the race. I personally have a two week taper, the longest run prior to the race is 18 miles a week out, but I do it really slow and relaxed. during my build up phases for the race I would average 100 miles per week (161km). As I said before you need to know yourself and your capabilities and measure this against you training schedule.
Feel free to email me if you want any further information.
