On your next long run take half of a Powergel packet and down with water to promote absorption and reduce irritation to stomach; take the other half later; try different intervals, maybe the first at 8 miles and the second at 12 etc. See how you respond.
Powergels have simple and complex carbs as well as sodium and potassium. Some have caffeine.
I carry a few grapes, gummy bears, and honey packets as well as a gel on 20-milers. The gels taste like crap but the honey and others are heavenly.
