I'm trying to get the word out about Sam Thompson, a friend of a friend. He is in the process of running 50 marathons, one in each state, in 50 consecutive days. He's doing this in order to raise awareness and money for victims of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast. Since the day after the hurricane hit, Sam has been coordinating a relief effort in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi through a local church there. He wants people to know that everything is not fixed yet, and people are still without homes. The rebuilding effort is still far from complete, even though it's not being discussed in the media very much anymore. Sam is paying for this fundraiser (transportation, food, and lodging expenses) out of his own pocket, until he finds a sponsor to help him. Any money being donated goes straight to the Gulf. He keeps none of it.
So you might be saying to yourself, "How can I help?" Well this is very simple. One way to help is to go run with Sam. Since there aren't many marathons scheduled during the middle of the summer, he's only running on an actual race day in 5 states. When there isn't a race scheduled, he's running a certified marathon course, by himself. Running clubs are helping to verify that he's actually running the correct course, etc. SO you can imagine it might get pretty lonely out there running by yourself. Even if you just run a couple miles with him, he would appreciate the company. Another way to help is to tell everyone you know what Sam is trying to accomplish. The quicker we spread the word, the more support he will get. He's getting ready to run his 17th marathon on Monday, July 17th.
He has a website, check it out. http://www.50in50in50.com/index.html
Thanks for your support, and hope you can make it out to see him!
