I have no problem drinking diet pepsi during ultras (50 mile, 24 hour, 100 mile, etc). But the carbonation (sp) would make me barf if I tried to do that during say, a 50K or a marathon.
Intensity makes the difference in what I can handle; then again everyone is a bit different.
For my caffine fix, I take some black coffee about 2 hours prior to the start of a marthon/50k.
I know that the runners of old used to use defizzed (flat) coke during marathons.
