I just ran my third half marathon. Before the first two, I had an energy bar and coffee along with my water. The result was an upset stomach after each race. But I really wanted the documented benefits of caffiene. So this time I drank a 20oz Mountain Dew before the race. I don't know if it was all mental, but it worked like a charm. No upset stomach, and a little bit of a kick about 5 miles in. I didn't notice any adverse effects at all.
