I have often wondered about the effect Cokes have on performance. I have tried to research the topic but I haven't been able to find any studies that specifically address performance. The main topic addressed in regard to soft-drinks is the sugar content. One thing I found interesting is that Hal Higdon in his book Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide admits that he drinks a Coke before many of his marathons. He says the sugar and caffeine actually help. He has run over 100 marathons with above average times so that seems to be some evidence that it doesn't hurt much if you are overall in good shape.
