Compartment Syndrome/Calf Strain?

I'm training for my first marathon and am in week 11 of 16. No problem running 15+ miles, stay hydrated, stretch before and after my runs. I was into my 4th mile of a 10 mile run Sunday when I started what I believe were cramps in my left calf. Had to stop running. Have been icing the area and stretching. That pain has subsided but now I feel dull pain along the outer side of the lower leg. Feels like the immediate left side of the calf region. It's not constant, usually do not feel it when walking, but if I stand on my toes I feel pain in the area. Not sure if it's the same injury or perhaps compartment syndrome, which I've been reading about. My understanding is that shin splints are muscular in nature and usually are on the inside of the leg, so I was eliminating them due to the area of pain I am experiencing. Anyone with similar experience here?
