20 years ago, my first Boston Marathon had a field of only 3,500 runners. That year the qualfying standard for males (under 40) was 2:50. Suffice it to say, lots of decent runners were simply unable to earn a BAA qualifer and Boston Bandits grew out of that.
Since next year's race will have a cap of 15,000 runners, many running for charity, Bandits are becoming a thing of the past.
