I ran my entire pregnancy, to include three marathons -- one at 4 months, two at 5.5 months. In answer to my question about running while pregnant, my first midwife said "we recommend our patients get exercise, so two to four miles a day is great. I don't recommend using this time to train for a marathon..." At the time I was using marathons to train for ultras, so I did scale back. I refrained from discussing running with my OBs/midwives after that. There was a distinct lack of info about running while pregnant, so it all fall back to listening to my body, scaling back my expectations, and enjoying what I could do. I ran up until my daughter was born, I did a 12K three weeks before she was born. It helped with everything from morning sickness to emotional ups & downs to a healthy weight gain. And I maintain it helped me recover much faster from an emergency C-section (same clinic as above couldn't figure out she was coming feet first until after my water broke!). It allowed me to feel more in control of my pregnancy, it gave me a sense of power and accomplishment. The most startling thing was how much I missed my little running partner once she was born. Which made the BabyJogger THE best baby present we received. Pregnancy running is wonderful if you're healthy and comfortable. Good luck with it!
