I've run NYC twice. I'm not in your league time-wise - I've done just over 4:00 three times and 3:48 once. But NYC is tough to run fast. Partly this is because of the huge crowds - at least most people can't move freely for a mile or more, and there are significant delays getting to the start line. Also, the course really isn't easy - the bridges require lots of climbs, and the Central Park hills, while not huge, are tough at the end of a long run. It's a fantastic race and one you should do sometime, but if you're not a shoo-in to qualify for Boston, I'd run elsewhere to seek a qualifier. Good luck!
