Some pretty interesting responses on this subject, and I found some to be pretty entertaining. I fully support the stand that the Race Director for the Marine Corps Marathon (MCM) took, and the thoughts and feelings of all those runners who put in the time to properly train to run a marathon. Cheating should not be allowed in any facet of life. On the other hand, I support charity causes. Why doesn't the Charity organizations establish some strick guidelines on entering a marathon, kinda like what Boston does? This is one way of weeding out potential "cheaters." Washington, DC, is having their inaugural marathon in March 06, and I noticed on their website where those desiring to run must provide proof that they have completed a marathon within a certain timeframe; times broken down by age groups. Also, why not have two separate medals (separate colors) at the end, "Official Finisher of the MCM", the other, "Charity Finisher at the MCM." These are just thoughts, good or bad, but I think what needs to be done is some brainstorming so that a happy decision can be made that will benefit all. But, it begins with stricker guidelines.
