I find it somewhat odd

The one thing that really gets me is that these people pulled this in the Marine Corps Marathon. While I've never been in the service, one thing I do know about that culture is that one of the worst things you can do is wear a medal you did not earn or say you were involved in some elite unit that you were not in. That is taken very seriously in that culture. About a decade ago, there was a high-ranking Naval officer who committed suicide because somebody accused him of wearing a medal that was not rightfully his. Several years ago, the manager of the Toronto Blue Jays was fired after he told stories of his exploits in Vietnam that he did not do (If any of JeansMarines were even casual baseball fans, how could they have missed that?). Last summer, there was a promotion for the movie "The Wedding Crashers" where moviegoers could purchase fake Purple Hearts like the ones the characters used in the movies to get free drinks and impress women. After a rather loud outcry from veterans groups, the promotion was stopped. I think that part of the movie still bothered them, however. So doing a stunt like this in an event named after the Marines, as part of a running group that seeks to align itself with the Marines, takes a lot of nerve.
