Thanks for your post. I'm glad to hear that many charity runners are not covering using donations to cover personal expenses. I hope your group is representative of most of these runners.

In reponse to Al's previous post, I'd like to point out a big distinction here between administrative and personal costs. A big charity event is expensive, and I'm not particularly shocked to hear that 25% of entry fees for a charity race, walk, or other event go towards costs (added police presence, security, check-in, redirecting traffic, first aid, permits, etc). I'd hope these costs could be kept to a minimum, but they don't bother me in principle.

I feel very differently about the use of funds for personal expenses. I am disturbed by the notion that someone who asks friends, family and co-workers for donations for a cause would think it's OK to turn around and use those 25% of the money raised for travel, hotel, and entry fees - essentially paying for a free vacation with money donated to fight disease. Lumping this together with "administrative costs" is a little shifty. These are very, very different things.
