When I read about the JeansMarines fiasco, I was disgusted. In June, I finished (notice I did not say "run" because I walked just about all of it) the Kona Marathon as part of the Train to End Stroke program. My time was longer than seven hours, but there was a nine-hour clock time. Given my training, injury problems and experience, that was probably the best I could have done on that particular day. I would have liked to do better and run more of the event and I look forward to trying another marathon and doing better and going faster, but I'm still glad I did it and proud of the finisher's medal. BUT at no point did anybody suggest that I take a shortcut and at no point did I even think of taking a shortcut (without chips, it would have been easy to get away with cheating, too). I could not have lived with myself had I cheated. One of the reasons I selected Kona was because of the nine-hour clock time. Had I chosen a race with a shorter clock time, such as the Vermont City Marathon (6 hours) or San Diego (7 hours) or USMC, I would have made darned sure I was prepared to finish within the alloted time. I'm sure the controversy about slow runner/walkers or charity runner/walkers will go on and on, but I do feel that anyone who enters any marathon has an obligation to be sufficiently trained and prepared to finish before the cutoff time.
