Whose race is it, anyway?

You ask if the organizations knew this wouldn't be tolerated. How could they not? They entered their members in an event organized and run by a group promoting an event 26.2 long, and presumably coached them with the understanding of the 7 hour limit. This, of course, flies in the face of the "everyone can do a marathon" philosophy--amend that to "anyone who can cover a mile in sixteen minutes, twenty-six times in a row". Just about anyone who took the task seriously and trained could. I have read the jeansmarines organizer's statement, NOT apologizing because these people were "running their own race". Well, they weren't. They told all their friends that they were going to WDC to participate in an established marathon, and then didn't.
