from a charity marathon finisher

I trained with Team Diabetes and raised my funds for the American Diabetes Association to run the Las Vegas Marathon, but got ill the week before and opted out. I suppose they should have mailed me a medal. I had already done 11 marathons at the time, and I may have felt fine by the day of the race, so maybe I should have tried to run anyway. I decided not to risk it mainly because I am a type 1 diabetic. It's been about 30 years since I was first diagnosed. Every marathoner faces their challenges and either overcomes them or doesn't. Whether we have raised any money for a charity or not should not matter. The only marathon I ever raised charity funds for is coincidentally the only one I ever registered for that I did not finish. I've run 28. I am sad that people want to make it easy to do something that has been so wonderfully challenging for me. I guess it is the mentality of all cheaters. I don't like it at all, but I take solace in the fact that giving them medals does not really make them marathoners.
