If you complete 26.2, you're a marathoner

Unfortunately, too many runners--especially those who gain all their self-esteem from their running--want people who are slower than they not to share the glory of being a marathoner. This is unfortunate, because these charity programs certainly get lots of people onto their feet. It saddens me that anyone would cheat (and it's cheating even if you're not going to win!) and that a "coach" would support this, as if the charity runner isn't required to complete the same course. (I can't help but note that 14 miles in 5-1/2 hours would be slower than walking pace!! Even a charity runner should be training). One downside of the charity running boom is that much more money is "raised" than what goes to the charity, because the participants often get plane fare and hotel rooms. The runner is, for all intents and purposes, getting a free trip because s/he has raised money for a charity. Yet, under the US Tax Code, the donor gets no benefit and deducts the entire amount. I see this as a misuse of the Tax Code.
