i've run 1 full and 4 half marathons and i've already had the opportunity to form an opinion about charity runners. first of all, i have to say that i think training to even walk the 26.2 is better than sitting around doing nothing. i'm not affiliated with any group and i trained myself (with the help of online suggestions) to run the full 26.2 (well, ok, i walked for about a mile around 23). it takes a lot to get up early and walk or run that full distance. maybe there ought to be a different type of medal for walkers or run/walkers who finish with a slower pace? that way the elite or even "average" runners will get the satisfaction of knowing they RAN the marathon, but the walkers still get a medal showing that they completed the distance as well? (maybe a sub-4:30 time would qualify?) anyway, bussing runners so they cross the finish "in time" is cheating- no question. rick's response is absolutely right on. i know the frustration of wanting to register for a race that's sold out, knowing that a walker gets the opportunity to go the distance at a race which should be your boston qualifying run. there are too many races to get upset, though, and honestly, other than the clique-ish-ness i've noticed with charity groups, there is no reason we can't share the course. charities need money, and people need an incentive to be physically active. let's just try to get along. remember, if you bust your butt and train hard you'll make it to boston, and you won't be stuck behind any walkers there :p
