Wow. This incident has really sparked a lot of strong opinions. Personally, I agree that cheaters are cheaters, and if you dont complete 26.2, you dont get a time, you get a DNF. Ill be the first to admit that Ive gotten pissed off when a large group of runners ahead of me all decide simultaneously that its time to walk and block a good portion of the road and impede my progress. Ill also admit that Ive seen people early on in a race that just dont look like theyre in the shape required to finish a marathon, or finish as fast as I will and thought superior thoughts.

However, do I think that they do not deserve to finish because theyre not fast? Do I think they dont deserve a medal because they need 5,6 hours or more to run/walk a marathon? No, I applaud them for their effort, the grit and determination it takes them to eventually cross the finish line, and just for getting out and enjoying our sport.

Those who have posted heartless comments to the effect of generalizing that all charity runners should get off the course, they diminish our sport and make it look bad, and theyre all too fat to run, should just stay in their armchairs are the ones who in my opinion are giving our great sport a bad name.

Most of these charities are amazing; people raising thousands of dollars to support research for cancer, arthritis, the list goes on, while doing the same training that we do. I was looking at joining Joints in Motion, but I didnt have the time to do what these people do.

Joints in Motion, for one, has it right. For the people who need the support of a coach and training in a group environment to get past that hurdle to finish a marathon, the option is there. For the people who are there more to raise the money for a good cause, you can opt for a smaller race (10K option in Honolulu, half option Lucerne, elsewhere).

As one earlier post suggested, get off your high horse, and stop giving us all a bad name with your ignorant rants. Yes JeansMarines cheated, and those involved deserve to lose their times, and medal, , and Jeansmarines should be banned from MCM, but saying that all charities should be banned from all races is just ignorant.
