At Disney, there was a group of people that missed the cutoff going into the magic kingdom. you had to be there by, I believe, 2 1/2 hours or something like that. There were probably 50 or so people who did not make it. This was at like the 10 mile mark..... they were not allowed to run another step, race over.... come back and try again next year sorta thing. THEY GAVE THEM ALL A MICKEY MOUSE MEDAL. I saw several people that evening without years on the bottom of their mickey's and everyone had the same story, I didnt finish but they gave me a medal anyway, just without the year on it.
I was mad as heck about it. How dare they, I had to run 26.2 miles to get that dang mouse, they got it for 10. Granted theirs did not have the year on the bottom. When I questioned the people at Disney about it I was told that they do that every year for people that dont quite make it. That way they go home with something. HUH, so now everyone needs to go home with something for their trouble....
A marathon is a marathon.... not a 20 miler, not a 10 miler, not a 26.1 miler... 26.2 or try again next year.
Now then, I have seen someone in a marathon that was wearing a charity runner shirt and actually pushing in a wheelchair the person they were running for. They both had on bibs and at the finish line they both got medals. I was seriously choked up, and had NO problem with the young guy who was very handicapped and probably would live to see the race next year getting a medal. heck yeah, if they hadnt given him one he couldda had mine. But an able bodied person who just didnt quite get there, nope, no medal for you.
