I guess taking short-cuts is not cheating if the race organizers allow it. Just saw this in an article by Amby Burfoot on the RW home page:
The organizers of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathons, popular among charity runners, say they have had few problems with course-cutters, and feel that cheaters are mainly cheating themselves. "If someone were to cheat themselves into the prize money, or an age-group award, that would be a whole different matter," says Elite Racing spokeswoman Susan Reid.
Several of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathons close their courses after something in the range of 7 hours to 7:15. These races have "diversion routes" that allow very slow runners or walkers, who wouldn't otherwise complete the course on time, to get to the finish. "It's a minimal amount of runners, and we do give them a medal," says Reid. "For these participants it's not about the time or place, but about crossing the line. We publish the diversion route/cut-off route up front so there is no confusion."
