Thanks for bringing this to light, I had no idea this was going on.
It is unacceptable under any circumstances for a participant to cut the course or get a ride to the finish without being disqualified. This is the most basic of rules! It must be vigilantly enforced at all times (literally) for the integrity of the sport. If an RD wants to leave the finish line open longer than the advertised cutoff time, fine, as long as the official results are accurate and true.
One of the reasons people give to charity runners is because a marathon is such a challenge. How would the donors feel if they knew their runner cut the course?
It takes guts to ban a charitable group (no surprise the Marines have guts), and they could be criticized by some, but it has to be done. I hope that if this has been tolerated for some, that it will stop. Maybe bringing this to the bigger public spotlight will make a difference.
