Races that have you sign up and enter 5-6 months prior to race create a lot of DNS. Twin Cities and Grandmas are both this way.

I believe that the races count on this percentage of DNS or they would limit the field even more.

Race start area / course / finish area / parking / number of hotels etc can only support a certain number of runners before it becomes hard to manage.

If they had signup only 2-3 months before the race, they would lose all that revenue from a portion of the DNS that they count on.

To me a DNS - show either injury or failing to train and many DNF are lack of proper training, poor running strategy or your body failing you that day.
