I like the idea of refunding at least part of the amount of the entry fee if a runner decides he/she is not in good enough condition or is injured. Or perhaps the runner just decided they didn't want to do a marathon at this time. The race should definitely allow a runner to defer the entry to the marathon for the following year if they don't show up for the race this year. Even if the entry fee goes up for next year's race. I have never entered a marathon race although I have done the distance a couple of times in training. I know that preparing for a marathon takes so many miles that it is easy to get an overuse injury.
