I'm all for walkers having separate events available to them. The race committee can organize the event to properly meet the needs of the walkers, and the walkers don't have to deal with runners complaining at them for getting in the way.
Power walking is becoming more and more popular. The Running Room (Canada) has added a whole slew of walking clinics to their roster and they are taking off. And hey - maybe some of those walkers will turn into runners.
The Walk to End Breast Cancer has proven that you can successfully put on a mega walking event and have it be successful.
More selfishly - as a runner I'm happy to see the walkers out of the running events and into their own category : )
I don't know the area you're in, but I think with the right marketing you could make a serious go of it.
