I think that running lies deep in hour genes. Humans are so succesful (i.e. we're many) because 1) we are intelligent, but also 2) because we move fast. And while reason 1 may be more important in the latest stages of our evolution, I believe moving fast over long distances were initially of greater importance. For instance, when we separated from the apes (whatever the details are), we stood up on two feet, and thus got the ability to run more than climb. So I think running evolved into a basic instinct for us, and that's partly why it's so important for us and popular today. But in America, the main reason may be that people need to loose some weight, hehe.
