Matt, there are some who think only running a marathon counts but I think the vast majority of people view completing a marathon to be a significant achievement no matter how you do it. What really matters is what YOU think.
My local running store sponsors a marathon training group for all levels of people. The folks who dont have strong running backgrounds usually follow the Galloway training programs. If a person who doesnt have a strong running background wants to train to run a marathon without walk breaks, they go into the Five and Dime (5k/10k) training program first or come back when they're better prepared to begin training to run a marathon. Try to looking for a group whose background and goals match yours. Having some local support can really help.
