I've never experienced that great a gain, but twice in the last year I've gained a pound or two. The first time was when I went from straight dieting to "getting fit." The second when I started training for a marathon. For me I think it was a case of "Okay, I don't have to worry about calories any more, I'm training my ass off." Wrong.
You didn't say how many miles you're putting in, but 2000 calories doesn't sound like all that much. But ... guestimating 2000 probably means a lot more. I log all my meals, but you'd be surprised how a bit of extra peanut butter manages to find its way into my pbj, or how a libation or two can instantly add an extra 600 calories.
