I'm not a nutritionist, but based on BMI data I've seen 1600 kCal is recommended for a sedentary, 50 year old, 5'6" male (me). I currently eat in the 1200-1500 kCal range and am losing weight, running 30 mpw. I run 5 days and lift weights 2 and I have plenty of energy.

Also, until a couple of weeks ago I was doing a lot of biking and felt generally run down much of the time. I've since eliminated the bike and am focused on getting fewer, but better quality workouts. So you might want to ensure you're getting enough rest, too.
