new shoes stopped training - please help

I'm back in training for my first marathon after a two year hiatus. That first time I developed plantar problems a month before race day after using a new pair of shoes for a couple of weeks and I'm worried about that again. I thought it was the miles, but months later, running in my old shoes was okay, yet the second I put on the new, bang!

I'm not naming shoes because I think they were just the wrong shoes for my feet, not something basically wrong with the shoe. I bought them at a reputable running store and they felt fine for the test run. I even gave them a "break in" period, though they're not supposed to need it.

Part of the problem is that shoe companies change models so darn often. I used to run in Saucony Jazz, then switched to the Procyon, and now I read that the new Procyon has the Jazz last (which makes it a very good candidate), but I ran in the other brand shoes with success for years with no problems.

Any advice?
