You are ready for fall with the caveat that the longer you give yourself the better.Your crosstraining is great stuff to help prevent injury.Use the race search engine at this site to check out different races and be sure to read the runners comments. Consider all the aspects, crowd support, gel and other on race support. Personally I like the larger races with the expo's, merchandise (hats, shirts, etc), large numbers of runners, etc. Especially for a newbie. Is it point to point or out and back? Doubling back can be a little boring. Many things to consider and we all have different likes and dislikes. I still think late fall is better for you than early fall. Stay in touch.
