I recently read an article on Honey vs. sports gels. Honey was just as effective because of its "slow burn" carbohydrate characteristics.
Honey is cheaper and easier to find. I found little honey packs at a convenient store that are about the size of chinese food condiment packs.
So I stuff about 3 or 4 of these tiny packs and I'm able to have smaller portions during my long runs as opposed to the 120 calorie gel pack for every hour of running.
