I was not sure what board to post this under, so I guess this misc. one is a good place.
I wanted to share a story with fellow marathoners: I have been looking for a job in accounting - the economy stinks where I am. I had been sending out the standard resume and cover letter.
I came back from a marathon last month and decided to change the cover letter to focus on my marathon running, emphasizing it displays dedication, hard work, etc.
The result: I received an email for an interview within one hour of sending the new letter. The first questions that I was asked had to do with the running. Not my CPA license. The achievement of completing several marathons. We talked about it for 10 minutes. I got the job, after meeting with the president who also asked me several questions about marathoning. (They also asked me about my past accounting experiences, but running is what got them to notice me).
Not sure if anybody may be searching for a job. Sometimes I take it for granted that I am able to run these races, but others will be real impressed that you do it. If you are not already doing so, make sure to really highlight it in your cover letter. I had it on my resume under hobbies, but sometimes I don't think people read those.
Happy running!
