If you just drink water and it's really hot out, then you could be putting yourself at risk for hypernatremia - excess salt in the blood stream. YOu've been sweating out copious amounts of NaCl, and if you're just drinking water, you're not replacing the lost electrolytes. The signs and symptoms of HN are the same as heat stroke, so athletes tend to drink more water, increasing the effects. The best solution is to drink something with some elctrolytes, like gatorade or powerade. And no, I'm not a sports drink sales person, I just had a friend who nearly died after a race becasue of this.
