It's not weird to have a meal 1-1/2 hours before a big race. I think you kind of missed the point. First of all, the further you are going to run--the more fuel you need for your journey. Second of all, Allegra's point is that the closer to race start--the more easily digested food you need--because you need it to be converted to energy quickly. What that translates to is that you shouldn't eat a big heavy meal of steak and eggs half an hour before a 5k or 10k--because you'll be done before your body has converted it into energy. However, for a big race like the marathon, your breakfast of waffles and a banana hardly sounds like enough to get you through 26.2 miles. I'd get some protein in there too. That way - you'll have carbs to burn at the start and the protein to sustain you a bit further in. I'm not qualified to tell you exactly how far ahead you should eat the protein before race start--but you could find that info in a number of books
