Yeah - I've been there before. Not alot of fun, but there are some things you can try that worked for me....
(1) Go to the restroom as close to the start as you possibly can. Then during the race pee early and often! Obviously this is tough when you are going for a PR, but something to keep in mind. During marathons I hit the second restroom stop on the route. The first is always full of people with "nervous" bowels, but usually the second is pretty clear because people don't need to go yet. And of course there are always trees...
(2) Try wearing a tampon during the race. Yeah, I am sure there is some serious medical reason not to do this -it probably increases your risk of TSS or something, but it does seem to help me. I actually read this tip on another running website, so it is out there somewhere. Check with your doc if you are worried about it.
(3) Kegel, Kegel, Kegel....
(4) If you are well hydrated, urine is about the same as regular old sweat, so figure it is just something you might have happen and don't worry about it. For the record, triathetes and bikers tend to go when they are on the bike because it takes so much time to stop, get off the bike, go, get back on, etc. Figure if Lance can go in his clothes, so can you!!
Good luck!
