I ran my first race (a 5k) in 1980 and didn't run my first marathon until 1995. Twelve marathons later, I'm still only doing 1-2 per year, but enjoying every one. Marathons are usually "destination vacations" (albeit sometimes only weekend ones to relatively cheap places). Training for them helps me in the shorter events around here, especially the club race series. My favorite distance is actually the half marathon; you feel like you've done something but it doesn't take nearly as long.
