Two articles at this site seem to conflict. Bob Cole, author of "Carolina Marathon hoping for long run," says fewer runners are running marathons, and those runners that do are running fewer marathons. In contrast, Bruce Brothers says the number of marathon finishers has grown from 260,000 in 1990 to 435,000 in 1999. Brothers says the number of US marathons with more than 1,000 finishers has grown from 26 to 45 during the same period. Who is right? Certainly the marathons in my area (Washington, DC) seem to fill quickly, even with enlarged fields.
