Maybe some marathoners ran two or more times a year and as a result were counted multiple times? Eg. If 1000 marathon finishers ran five races, some one m,ight say there were 5000 marathon finishers and he will be correct while another person might just say there were only 1000 marathon finishers and he will also be correct. Depends on how u look at it.
