Is this occurring on just one toe? Or more? If so, which one(s)?

If the condition is confined to one foot only, it may have to do with a foot length decrepency -- which is hardly uncommon. Black toenail on your shorter foot indicates a poor fit at the heel which promotes forward slipping. Black toenail on your longer foot indicates shoes (or toebox) are likely too snug.
